Butterfly photography is easy if you know how to do it properly.  You need a zoom or a macro lens to photograph a butterfly.

Butterflies are slow in the morning and move fast as the temperature gets hotter in the day.

When you are in the field, observe the butterflies around you and let them settle down in your presence.

Keep the exposure compensation to -.03 for white subject and +.03 for the dark subject for better exposure.

I would recommend the aperture f7.1 and ISO on auto. Adjust the shutter speed accordingly to keep the ISO lowest possible but don't go below 1/640.

Closer the subject lesser the depth of field. So keep your hand steady and focus on the eyes of the butterfly for better shots.

You need to work even harder when you try to click a butterfly having the wings open. Keep the focus point on the eye and ensure the entire butterfly is in focus.

Having the aperture closed to f7.1 will give you the crisp shot of wings. Mind that your hand is stable to have the subject in focal plane.
